How to REC Safe
Consider these three tenets when going on your adventure:
R – Refreshments: Always bring hydration on your adventure. Water is best, but also other fluids, such as things with electrolytes are good too. If you’re going to be out for an extended amount of time or in a remote location, consider bringing a water purifier in case you’re out longer or run out of something to drink. Don’t forget some energy bars or other snacks! Be prepared to be out longer than you expect!
E – Emergency Preparedness: Always bring at least a first aid kit, but a trauma kit is best. Consider also a fire starter, emergency blanket… and be CPR certified. You never know if you’ll need to help a fellow adventurer, your buddy, or even yourself. Be prepared to be out longer than you expect!
C – Communications: Always tell someone where you’re going and for how long. You can also file an adventure plan (SYP). Be sure to bring a communication device(s), but don’t solely rely on it. Some devices like phones may not have service. If using a satellite communicator, be sure to have backup battery power and charging, especially for prolonged or remote trips. Be prepared to be out longer than you expect!
